The gift of silence

When the lips are closed,

An old Sufi tradition advises us to speak 

only after our words have managed 

to pass through four gates. 

At the first gate, we ask ourselves, 

"Are these words true?" 

If so, we let them pass on; if not, back they go. 

At the second gate we ask; "Are they necessary?" 

At the third gate we ask; "Are they beneficial?" 

and at the fourth gate, we ask, "Are they kind?" 

If the answer to any of these is no, 

then what you are about to say should be left unsaid.

Translation:
The state of the faithful cannot be described.
Anyone who describes it shall regret the attempt.
No paper, no pen, no scribe, can record the state of the faithful.
Such is the name of the immaculate lord.
Only one who has faith comes to know such a state of mind. (12)
The faithful have intuitive intelligence.
The faithful know about all the worlds.
The faithful shall never be struck across their face.
The faithful shall not have to go with the messenger of death.
Such is the name of the immaculate lord.
Only one who has faith comes to know such a state of mind. (13)
The path of the faithful shall never be obstructed.
The faithful shall depart with honor and respect.
The faithful do not follow empty religious rituals.
The faithful are firmly bound to the dharma.

The faithful find the door of liberation.
The faithful uplift and redeem their family and relations.
The faithful are saved, and carried across with the sikhs of the guru.

The Plurality of Spiritual Moods

To illustrate the plurality of spiritual moods or sacred traditions, RamaKrishna told this parable. The Hindus call that which quenches our thirst 'jal', Muslims call it 'pani', the English call it 'water'. Similarly, each brings a container that is a product of a different culture, and yet they all draw from exactly the same source of refreshment. The clear water of Consciousness, with no shape of its own, perfectly fills the cultural receptacles. Even this analogy could mislead, however, if we concluded that Consciousness is a substance separate from us or from various receptacles. All is Consciousness. As RamaKrishna expresses it:"God alone is."

Gayatri Mantra

Blessings of the One Light to you!

 In his book, Sadhana, Sri Swami Shivananda wrote this about the Gayatri Mantra,
